Choosing a new duvet can be a frustrating task even for the seasoned Internet
surfer. What types are available? Which type is best for me? What is tog
rating? The list of questions goes on….
Duvets generally fall into one of two categories, natural or synthetic.
Today synthetic duvets can be as lightweight, warm and easier to care for than natural down duvets.
One type of synthetic duvet, the Micro fibre double duvet, has many qualities, which you would come to expect from any high quality natural down filled duvet.
Though slightly more expensive than other non-allergenic types of polyester / Hollow fibre filled duvets, the Micro fibre duvet is designed to emulate the characteristics and feel of a duck or goose down duvet.
Micro fibre double duvets, normally 13.5 tog or 10.5 tog, are made from a highly compressed synthetic revolutionary material. This man made material differs from conventional Hollow fibre filling, in that it has an air pocket running through the length of the fibre. The air pocket is pumped into each individual fibre as it is being spun, allowing air to be trapped within the filling.
Micro fibre duvets have the added benefit of being machine washable up to 60°C, which is the temperature that kills dust mites. Other duvet types, natural or synthetic normally have a recommendation to be washed at 40°C.
You can expect a Micro fibre double duvet to last between 5 and 10 years given appropriate care. New duvets should be aired for 24 hours before use. This ensures maximum warmth and helps warm air to flow inside the duvet.
Shake the duvet from time to time to fill it with air and maximise it's
warmth.
A 'tog' is a sector standard name used for measuring the heat of a duvet.
The higher the tog rating or tog price, the hotter the duvet or duvet though the tog does not represent how heavy, light or thick the duvet or duvet could be. Lightweight duvets and duvets can insulate your body from the cold just as effectively as heavier ones. This is because some duvet and cover fillings are better insulators than others.
Togs are measured in units of thermal resistance. For instance, if a duvet or duvet had a tog rating of 4.5 then it might be more acceptable to be used in the summertime months. At the other end of the scale, duvets or duvets with a tog rating of 13.5 or higher would be used in the less warm months of the year. A typical myth manufactured by buyers is a synthetic duvet or duvet, ie : stuffed with Hollow fibre or cluster fill fibre will be less warm and less effective than a natural fill duvet like goose or duck down. Goose or duck down is lighter and has more fill power than synthetic filled duvets.
This indicates that less natural filling is needed to achieve the same tog worth as a synthetic duvet.
